Sushi Zen, Sushi Paradise: March 2008 Sharpie on cardboard Approx 7x10” I was really unproductive one night back in March and got super pissed at myself for said lack of productivity. Before I went to bed I resolved to produce at least one crappy drawing and here it is. I think this is the first symmetrical piece in which I drew some parts of it one side up and then flipped it upside down and drew in other elements. qI was trying to go for a Dante’s Inferno/Purgatorio thing. S & G: 2008 Ballpoint pen on cardboard 3x9” In an effort to be more productive, I always try to carry some piece of art or another on me at all times. This piece was started on Father’s Day while I sat in my car and waited for Mom to come home from church. This piece is one of many small drawings being produced to act as scenic supplements-vignettes, if you will-to add to the understanding of my now-3-years-in-progress painting of the Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. I’m trying to combine my crazy handdrawn work, pixellation, polygonal drawing, and pre-renaissance non-perspectival landscape drawing in a hopefully overall frenzied and chaotic piece celebrating man’s destruction. Woo hoo! © Ashley Anderson

Futile Self Portrait (Portrait of the Artist as an Artist): 2008 Acrylic and ink on mat board 10x10” As much as I love to make art, I try not to forget what my professor Bruce Little used to tell me: “It’s not the art that’s important, it’s what you make the art about that’s important”. As artists we shouldn’t forget that life goes on outside the studio. Make as many grand gestures as you like, but when it’s all said and done you’re just jerking off no matter what you’re making or saying. A good artist doesn’t forget to LIVE. The image came off of a ZIG Posterman Big and Broad marker and was definitely inspired by Picabia’s “Portrait of a Young American Girl in a State of Nudity” and my love of The Book of Ecclisiastes. © Ashley Anderson

Billy Cantrell, Child Soldier: 2008 Ballpoint pen on mat board 9x12” This is a remake of an existing drawing done at the request of one of my old students from my teaching days in Statesboro. I love this picture of him, it’s pretty funny. And yes, that’s an Automatic Kalashnikov 1947 (AK-47). © Ashley Anderson
